Artwork and specialist object cleaning is a specialist surface cleaning service where careful assessment of the object’s material, condition, value and the intended cleaning outcome is particularly important. We can clean smaller artworks and specialist objects in our own workshop. For larger, difficult-to-move or permanently installed objects, sculptures and fixed elements, we work on-site at the customer’s premises. Can the patina or original surface character be preserved?

In many cases, yes, provided that a controllable cleaning technology appropriate to the task is selected. Patina, natural ageing and the historical character of an object are not necessarily forms of contamination that should be removed. In these cases, the aim is not to produce an as-new appearance, but to achieve a cleaner, more orderly surface while preserving the character of the object.

What determines whether cleaning is carried out in the workshop or on-site?

The decision depends on the size, mobility, fragility and fixing of the object, as well as the conditions at the site. For smaller objects that can be transported safely, workshop cleaning may be advantageous. Larger, installed, difficult-to-move or fixed objects generally require on-site cleaning.

When is intensive cleaning not recommended?

Intensive cleaning may not be appropriate when an object has a fragile, friable or cracked surface, has previously been poorly repaired, or where removing the contamination could damage the original surface. In these cases, we recommend a gentler, gradual approach or a method verified through test cleaning.
